Thank you to Harrison, Bill and New Kid for their nice comments.

I've decided (again) to keep off the internet until I finish my thesis. I'm just using blogging and dieting and television etc. as ways to keep myself away from my work when I know that if I do insane hours for a couple of months I can get this all over with.

I'm philosophical about the PhD. If I had my time again I wouldn't change a thing because I have had such interesting experiences. But I also acknowledge that it was a career dead end and that I wouldn't have chosen this path if I had known more about the academic job market. I guess that's something most PhD students learn. Which is a pity.
